Three years ago, our Founder Michael sat down the night before a performance review with a blank document open and no idea what to write.

Not because the year had been uneventful, it had been one of the busiest of his career. But somewhere between the deadlines and the meetings and the small fires put out along the way, all of it had quietly slipped away. What he remembered was the last six weeks, and the one thing that had gone dramatically wrong in March. Everything else, the steady, cumulative work that had actually made the difference, was just gone.

He wasn't alone. Every manager he talked to described the same problem from the other side: trying to reconstruct six or eight people's entire year from memory, under deadline, right before calibration. Nobody was lying. Nobody was careless. Memory just isn't built to hold a year of work that was unremarkable in any single moment but added up to something real.

The tools that existed to fix this made it worse. A doc started in January, abandoned by February. A spreadsheet nobody opens until the night before it's due. Software built for one narrow slice of job titles, as if a salesperson's quarter or a teacher's semester didn't deserve the same kind of memory as a shipped feature.
